The activity last Sunday at the OCAT museum was an earopening activity. After a round of introductions, we were set off on an adventure of sound. Each pair accompanied by a blind person to teach us how to navigate using our sense of hearing. Led by the tap of a cane, we walked along North Suzhou Lu to Henan Lu bridge and back again. Along the walk, we heard the tapping of a hammer from a tall building about 1 kilometer away and above us filling the air with vibrations and echoing on every surface in every direction. I thought that this was a great moment that also mimicked the clockwork tapping of our blind leader. The two unrelated events had an interesting rhythm going in and out of time with each other, as if somehow they were improvising a performance together. It is these serendipitous moments that to me, deserve a sound recording. To make the contrast even more interesting, I recorded in stereo with the hammering sound on one side, and the stick on the other. As I listen back to it, both the sounds gave an enormous amount of depth to the scene and created a surreal experience. During the activity, I learned that the sound of the tap of a blindperson’s stick can unlock many meanings of the world around us. The way the tap echoes against nearby surfaces can indicate distance and volume. The way it scrapes the ground reveals surface material and finds obstacles. But the most intriguing thing I realized is that it is an indication of presence. When one of my group members was walking with their eyes closed, I stood still and watched as they came forward and eventually bumped my leg with the stick. It is a simple concept: if you don’t hear it, you don’t see it. What an interesting way to imagine our world distilled into colorless, basic shapes. When we close our eyes we have to redefine our vocabulary of the world around us. To unlearn what we have seen and to rebuild a new city based on sound. What an amazing way to unleash creativity I always tell people to close their eyes and paint a picture of their surroundings using sound as their paintbrush. In the end, if you like what you ‘see’, then you record it. You must keep in mind however, that the recording we make will never be the same as what we remember it. Recording sound is not like taking a photo, it evolves over time. It changes every time we listen to it because we forget, or we grow up, or we move away. It evolves with us. A sound recording is not made to preserve time and memory, it is made to create new ones. As springtime quickly nears and the sounds of the seasonal wildlife return, I encourage readers to experience your surroundings in a different way and close your eyes and listen, maybe even record what you hear. Like me, you will quickly realize that the city you thought you knew so well is more beautiful than you could have ever imagined.
